Classic Arena: how to climb the ranking

Classic Arena is the cheapest source of medals and Great Hall progress, yet it is exactly where most accounts stall between Silver and Gold. Below is a practical climbing routine: what actually moves your rating, how to build the team, and which habits hold you back.

What actually moves your rating

In Classic Arena you only play offense: you pick an opponent from the list, spend a token and gain points for a win. A lost attack does not take rating away — you simply waste a token and some time. Hence the boring rule number one: do not attack what you cannot break.

Defense is a separate team that works while you are offline. Defensive wins earn points and close out some daily and weekly tasks, while constant defensive losses are the main reason you slowly slide down between sessions. Leaving a random hero in defense just to save time is a bad habit if you are aiming at the higher tiers.

Tier rewards come on a weekly cycle: medals, gear, resources. Medals go into the Great Hall, and its bonuses — Accuracy, Crit Damage, HP, Defense — apply to the whole account in every mode. That is the real reason to climb: not the rating number itself, but the permanent bonuses behind it.

One more thing: the opponent list can be refreshed. It is a free tool that most newcomers never touch, even though it turns Arena from a lottery into a choice of comfortable targets. As a rule, beating someone ranked above you pays more points.

Speed is the currency of the Arena

Most fights are decided by whoever moves first. The practical minimum for any team is a speed lead with a Speed aura plus a booster who fills the Turn Meter of the whole squad. Without that, your nuker stands in control for the entire fight or dies before landing a single hit.

  • Speed boots are mandatory on the booster and on the debuffer, even at the cost of other stats.
  • The Speed set goes on the booster and on the buff stripper. Your nuker usually does not need it — damage matters more.
  • Check the enemy aura before the fight: if the opponent has a strong speed lead and your aura is weaker, the opening will not go your way.
  • If you definitely cannot outspeed the enemy, skip the fight. One wasted token is cheaper than a broken win rate.

Turn order and the standard combo

The working sequence looks like this: boost → strip buffs or control → Decrease DEF → nuke. Every link must be speed-tuned: booster fastest, debuffer next, nuker last. A gap of a few speed points is usually enough to keep the order stable.

Accuracy is critical for the debuffer: roughly 150–250 is enough in the middle tiers, while the top tiers push the bar towards 300 and beyond. Missing on Accuracy is the most frustrating way to lose: the combo lands, but Decrease DEF never sticks.

Your nuker wants 100% Crit Rate and as much Crit Damage as possible — Crit Damage gloves, not Attack gloves. If the nuker scales off HP, it needs HP and Crit Damage, not Attack.

Against teams with revives (Siphi the Lost Bride, Marichka the Unbreakable and the like), without buff stripping and Block Revive you simply will not finish the target in one turn. Do not take those fights as a pure damage race.

Budget teams that actually work

Epics and rares are enough to hold the middle tiers comfortably. You only need four roles covered.

RoleHeroesWhat they bring
Booster and speed leadDeacon Armstrong, Ursala the Mourner, SeekerSpeed aura and Turn Meter fill — your team moves first
Buff strip, debuffsMadame Serris, Dhukk the Pierced, Umbral EnchantressBreak the enemy combo, apply Decrease DEF and control
DamageGenbo the Dishonored, Magnarr, Skullcrown, Gala Longbraids, Whisper, FenaxFinish the target in one or two hits
SurvivabilityRector Drath, Vogoth, Conellia, Rian the ConjurerHealing, revives, shields — the safety net when the boost fails

The main idea: two or three strong roles beat four mediocre ones. If you have no proper booster, no legendary nuker will save the fight.

Owners of top legendaries should remember that Arbiter, Siphi the Lost Bride, Marichka the Unbreakable, Mithrala Lifebane or Armanz the Magnificent decide the outcome before the first hit — but only inside a properly built team with an aura and a booster.

Defense: how to hold your tier

People often build defense on the principle of the richer the better, and that is a mistake. Defense should be annoying rather than impressive on paper: either a fast combo that outspeeds the attacker, or a bulky core with healing and revives that cannot be killed in two turns.

  • Fill all four slots instead of leaving one hero on duty.
  • Setups with two supports and one durable nuker work well — they take a long time to break.
  • Do not slot heroes without gear and masteries: defensive wins count towards tasks, but an empty slot brings none.
  • If you deliberately farm lower tiers, a weak defense is a valid trick. Just rebuild it well before a push, not five minutes before the reset.

Mistakes that stall your climb

  1. Judging by team power. That number says nothing about turn order or Accuracy.
  2. One nuker and three fillers. Without a boost and Decrease DEF, the nuker does not kill.
  3. Attacking without reading the enemy team. Check the aura, the booster and any revive heroes first.
  4. Ignoring affinity. Weak affinity cuts damage and breaks crits, so the hit that should kill does not.
  5. Spending tokens on a maybe. The same tokens spent on fights you are sure to win pay more points.
  6. Forgetting the refresh. Reroll the list until you see a target you can definitely break.

Summary

  • Speed wins Arena: a speed lead, a booster, speed boots and the Speed set are the baseline of any team.
  • Turn order matters more than total damage: boost → strip → Decrease DEF → nuke.
  • Debuffer Accuracy and 100% Crit Rate on the nuker win more fights than one more legendary in the roster.
  • Build defense to be inconvenient for the attacker, not just expensive.
  • Refresh the opponent list and never spend tokens on fights where you do not move first.
