F2P Strategy in RAID: How to Play Without Spending and Catch Up

Playing RAID: Shadow Legends free-to-play is less about patience than about the order of your decisions: what you level first, where your energy goes, and when you deliberately do not open shards. Below is a practical plan that gets a free account through the core content in a few months and keeps it competitive in a clan and in the Arena.

Three rules that matter more than any legendary

Most free accounts stall not because they lack legendaries, but because their resources are spread too thin.

  • One finished champion beats five started ones. Until you have a 6★ with a full build and masteries, a new exciting legendary is just a portrait in your vault.
  • Resources go to a goal, not to a mood. Energy goes into whatever moves the account today: masteries, gear, finishing an event. Gems buy energy at the right moment, not just in case.
  • Dungeons catch you up, not shards. Steady gear and mastery farming does more than one more unbuilt champion.

The first weeks: order of steps

  1. Take your starter — Kael, Athel, Elhain or Galek — to 6★ with a full build. That is your damage dealer for the early and mid game.
  2. Build a minimal team: one damage dealer, one support (heal, shield or cleanse) and one debuffer. Those three roles cover most early content.
  3. Run the Minotaur's Labyrinth for masteries. Fully build two or three champions instead of sprinkling scrolls across the whole roster.
  4. Move on to Dragon's Lair, then Fire Knight's Castle and Spider's Den once the right champions appear.
  5. Hit the Clan Boss every day, even with a weak team. It is the account's main daily income.
  6. Treat Faction Wars as background. Do not sink resources there until your main team clears dungeons reliably.

Energy and gems: where not to spend

  • Do not buy shards with gems outside events — you pay full price for pure randomness.
  • Do not refill energy out of habit. A refill makes sense when an event or a guaranteed reward is close.
  • Do not expand your champion vault for the future. Free space by sorting duplicates and fodder first.
  • Do not build a second and third tournament team before the first one clears content reliably.
  • Do not chase every promotion. Skipping an event costs nothing; dumping resources into it does.

Shards and events: discipline over luck

The rule is simple: open shards only during an event that pays you extra — double chances, a guaranteed champion or tournament points. Outside that window a shard is a lottery ticket with no bonus attached.

Keep Ancient and Void shards separately and do not confuse mood with math. Guaranteed rewards and targeted shards, where you pull for a specific champion pool, are usually better value than a mass opening — especially while your key roles are still missing.

Do not chase legendaries for the collection. A free account wins with epics and rares that have a clear job: turn meter boost, decrease DEF, poison, counterattack, boss damage.

Who to build: a cheap core

These champions are reachable without heavy spending and cover the key roles. You do not need all of them — pick one per role.

ChampionRoleWhere it shines
Deacon ArmstrongSpeed, decrease DEF, turn meter boostArena, dungeons, Clan Boss
ManeaterUnkillable setups and team supportClan Boss
DemythaCooldown reduction and speedClan Boss, dungeons
GeomancerBoss damage, HP burnClan Boss and bosses

UugoCleanse and debuffsDungeons, Arena
Fahrakin the FatAlly attack, crit buffClan Boss, dungeons

The logic is simple: boss damage and survivability first, then speed and debuffs, then everything else.

Clan Boss, Arena and dungeons: where free-to-play catches up

Clan Boss. Daily chests are the steadiest source of shards, books and gems on a free account. A weak team that hits every day gives more over a month than a perfect team once a week. Build the core around Maneater, Demytha, Akemtum and Pain Keeper.

Arena. You farm medals for the Great Hall here; it is not about proving a point. Set a defence that is annoying to break, attack on schedule and do not chase the top: steady trading of fights pays bonuses that work in every dungeon afterwards.

Dungeons. Do not farm everything at once. Pick one, push the team to a stable clear, then move on. One reliable run beats five that sit on the edge of a wipe.

Summary

Free-to-play in RAID is won by order, not luck: one finished champion, energy aimed at a specific goal, shards opened only during events, and the Clan Boss every single day. With that discipline an account catches up to the average player within a few months and never hits a paywall.
