Live Arena: Draft, Bans and How Not to Lose

Live Arena is the one RAID: Shadow Legends mode where the loss often starts before the first turn — on the draft screen. Gear and masteries matter, but a badly built lineup dies before it swings. Below is the practical logic of picks, bans and habits that removes most avoidable defeats.

Draft: what is actually decided before the fight

The draft is not about picking your favourite champions. It is a win condition declared in advance, plus a backup plan in case your opponent reads it.

  • Pick order is asymmetric. The player who picks first hands the opponent two back-to-back picks, which balances the value of that first choice. So your first pick has to be flexible, not narrow.
  • Not everyone you draft reaches the fight. The ban phase cuts one champion out of your lineup, so every key role needs a substitute. If your whole plan hangs on a single Turn Meter booster, that booster gets banned.
  • The pick timer is real. Hesitating usually ends in a random champion, and a random champion in Live Arena is close to a guaranteed loss.
  • You can see their picks. Read their lineup, not your dream team: do they have a cleanser, a reviver, buff stripping?

Bans: one click that breaks their engine

Bans are the most underrated skill in the mode. A bad ban means removing the strongest champion on the board. A good ban removes the piece their team cannot function without.

SituationWhere to spend the ban
You are clearly slowerTheir Turn Meter booster: Seeker, Deacon Armstrong, Arbiter
You play through controlTheir cleanser and support: Rector Drath, Runekeeper Dazdurk, Siphi the Lost Bride
They have one obvious damage dealerThat nuker: Magnarr, Genbo the Dishonored, Skullcrown
They are built to outlast with revivesThe reviver: Ursala the Mourner, Arbiter
Their plan is to strip your buffsMadame Serris

And the key point: ban what hurts your plan, not what looks scary. An expensive legendary you can comfortably out-tempo is a poor ban target.

First pick: a universal champion, not a favourite

  • Take someone who works at any speed: a support with cleansing, Turn Meter control and survivability. Arbiter, Siphi the Lost Bride, Ursala the Mourner and Deacon Armstrong almost never fail as first picks.
  • Do not open with a pure damage dealer. The opponent simply drafts defence, cleansing and control, and you are left without a plan.
  • Do not take a champion whose entire value is one skill — they either get banned or never get to press it.
  • Keep your last pick for the counter slot: whatever their lineup is missing an answer to.

Roles and synergy: five jobs, four slots

You fight with four slots but always have more jobs than slots, so build around one win condition instead of a bit of everything.

  • Tempo. A leader with an SPD aura plus a Turn Meter booster. If you have no tempo, you need plan B: high RES, survivability and the ability to eat the first volley.
  • Defence shredding. Decrease DEF and buff stripping — without them your nuker hits a wall.
  • Damage. One good area nuker is usually worth more than two average ones.
  • Staying alive. Cleansing, healing or a revive, otherwise any control team turns the fight into a beatdown.
  • Flex slot. Control, Provoke or a single-target finisher aimed at this specific opponent.

On builds: 100% crit rate on the nuker, ACC on control and debuffers, RES on supports, SPD on the booster. Set turn order in advance — booster, then Decrease DEF, then damage. Otherwise your nuker swings before the debuffs land and the whole volley is wasted.

Mistakes that lose even matchups

  • Drafting all damage. Against cleansing and sustain, that lineup never gets there.
  • No cleanse against control. One area stun and the fight is over.
  • Greedy bans. Spending the ban on the scary champion and leaving their actual engine alive.
  • Autopilot. Running the same lineup into every opponent.
  • Unstable roster. Eight to ten fully geared champions win more than twenty half-built ones.
  • Playing on tilt. After two losses in a row, close the mode: picks get rushed and the same mistakes repeat.

Budget draft: filling roles without legendaries

Live Arena does not demand a full legendary collection, it demands covered roles.

  • Tempo and Decrease DEF: Deacon Armstrong, Seeker.
  • SPD aura and revive: Ursala the Mourner.
  • Buff stripping: Madame Serris.
  • Cleansing, healing, revive: Rector Drath, Runekeeper Dazdurk, Vogoth.
  • Damage: Magnarr, Genbo the Dishonored, Skullcrown, Gala Longbraids, Fenax.
  • Control: Dhukk the Pierced, Umbral Enchantress, Inquisitor Shamael.

The starter champions Kael, Athel, Elhain and Galek barely see play in Live Arena — the epics above cover their jobs better. Keep 8–10 ready champions with artifact presets saved and the draft stops being a lottery.

Summary

Live Arena is lost on the draft screen, not in the fight: a narrow first pick, banning the strongest instead of the most needed champion, no cleanse and no backup for a key role. Build 8–10 geared champions, decide your win condition, ban the piece that holds their lineup together and always have a tempo plan B. That is enough to stop giving away even matchups at champion select.
