Rare champions in RAID: Shadow Legends are not just early-game filler. In 2026 a few of them still solve key jobs: boss damage, Clan Boss poisons and budget support. Here is who to rank up first, how to build them and where they actually work.
Why rare champions still matter in 2026
Rarity is not the same as weakness. Rare champions need cheaper books, are easier to book out and often fill stars in Faction Wars and restricted rooms. Doom Tower has rare-only rooms, and Sintranos uses rarity restrictions, so writing off every rare is a mistake.
But not every rare deserves resources. In 2026 the value comes from utility: poisons, turn meter control, healing, control or enemy MAX HP damage. A rare with only raw damage and no useful debuffs falls behind epics and legendaries quickly.
Coldheart — the rare boss damage pick
Coldheart is the best-known rare PvE champion. Her strength is enemy MAX HP damage and turn meter reduction. Against Spider, Dragon, Ice Golem and Fire Knight she delivers results without legendary gear.
Build her for crit: crit rate close to 100%, then crit damage, speed and accuracy for turn meter control. She is not an arena pick, but in dungeons she remains top-tier among rares. Put books into the MAX HP damage skill first; other books are not wasted, but the priority is clear.
Frozen Banshee — poisons for Clan Boss and Dragon
Frozen Banshee is a rare poisoner. Clan Boss teams use her for steady poisons and poison sensitivity; Dragon teams use her for debuff damage on the boss. She will not replace a top epic poisoner, but she covers the role early and mid-game.
Build accuracy for your content, then speed and survivability. Do not try to make her an arena nuker — her value is in debuffs. If you do not have Maneater or another strong poisoner, Banshee can work in Clan Boss for months. Books go into poisons and poison sensitivity.
Pain Keeper — budget Clan Boss support
Pain Keeper is a rare support known in unkillable comps with Maneater. She heals and helps skill rotation, so budget Clan Boss teams still use her. She is not a universal champion; she is a tool for a specific setup.
Without Maneater, Pain Keeper is a lower priority. She can help in Faction Wars and restricted rooms, but should not take resources from Coldheart or Frozen Banshee. Build speed and survivability; accuracy matters only if you rely on her debuffs.
Starter rares: Kael, Athel, Elhain, Galek
The starter rares are still relevant for new accounts. Kael is the most universal: poisons help in Clan Boss and wave damage helps in campaign. Athel brings weaken and decent wave clear. Elhain and Galek provide AoE damage for campaign and early dungeons.
Take them to 60 if they are your first team, but do not spend legendary books on them and do not expect them to clear endgame. Kael is the one who most often stays in Clan Boss; the others fall off faster.
How to build and who to skip first
Finish two or three rares for specific jobs instead of building everyone at once. Gear: speed boots almost always, accuracy on debuffers, crit on Coldheart. Give masteries and books only to champions you actually use in Clan Boss, dungeons or Faction Wars.
| Champion | Role | Key stats | Where to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coldheart | Boss damage | Crit rate, crit damage, accuracy | Spider, Dragon, Golem, Fire Knight |
| Frozen Banshee | Poisons | Accuracy, speed, HP | Clan Boss, Dragon |
| Pain Keeper | Support | Speed, HP, defense | Clan Boss comps, Faction Wars |
| Kael | Poisons/waves | Accuracy, speed, crit | Clan Boss, campaign |
Do not put rare books into a champion you will replace in a week. Do not feed rares to legendaries unless you are sure: Faction Guardians and restricted rooms matter more than a quick gain. Rare damage dealers without debuffs and tanks without utility usually should not get your first investments.
Summary
In 2026, from the rare pool, rank up Coldheart, Frozen Banshee and Pain Keeper first — but for specific jobs. The starters Kael, Athel, Elhain and Galek cover the early stage and do not need legendary books. Rares are strong in narrow roles, so do not try to make them universal: Clan Boss and dungeons first, arena later.
