A universal build is not a myth: it is a deliberate compromise that clears most PvE content with one set of artifacts and still holds its own in Arena. Here is how to gear a champion for several modes at once, which numbers to aim for, and where that compromise honestly breaks.
What universal gear actually means
Universality is not a huge number in one stat — it is the absence of weak spots. A champion that moves early, lands its debuffs and does not fold to the first AoE is useful everywhere, even if its damage is unimpressive.
So the order is simple: cover the basics first (Speed, survivability, Accuracy for the kit), then add what the role needs — Crit for damage dealers, Resist for tanks, HP for supports. A build for everything always pays somewhere, and it is better to pay in damage than in Speed.
The three stats that decide everything
- Speed. Speed boots are close to mandatory. A 5–6★ piece gives roughly 40–45 Speed, and that matters more than any ATK%. A champion without Speed just stands there.
- Accuracy. If the kit has debuffs, Accuracy is not optional. For most mid-level PvE dungeons aim for around 200–250; for high Doom Tower floors, Hydra and top Arena you want 300 and up. Do not overcap for safety — every extra chunk of Accuracy is HP or Speed you did not get.
- Survivability. HP% or DEF% on the chest, and on the gloves too if the champion is not a damage dealer. A universal champion should not die to a stray AoE.
Crit Rate up to 100% is a goal for damage dealers and for nobody else. Supports do not need Crit at all — those substats are better spent on Speed and bulk.
Templates by role
These are starting points, not law: if your set and substats already cover a requirement, swap the main stat.
| Role | Gloves | Chest | Boots | Substats to chase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Damage dealer | Crit Rate (to 100%) or Crit DMG | ATK% | Speed | Crit DMG 150–200%+, Speed 170+, ATK% |
| Debuffer / controller | Accuracy | HP% or DEF% | Speed | Accuracy 200–250+, Speed, HP |
| Support / buffer | HP% or DEF% | HP% or DEF% | Speed | Speed 200–250, HP, a little Resist |
| Tank / healer | HP% or DEF% | HP% or DEF% | Speed | HP, DEF, Resist, Speed 170+ |
Accuracy gloves are worth it only when substats and sets do not get you there. Otherwise it is a wasted slot.
Sets that work everywhere
- Perception (2 pieces) — Accuracy plus Speed. The most universal set in the game for debuffers and supports, and rarely a bad choice.
- Speed (2 pieces) — a safe addition to any main set.
- Immortal, Regeneration — bulk for Clan Boss, solo farming and long fights.
- Stalwart — made for Clan Boss and Hydra, where surviving to the end beats raw damage.
- Relentless — extra turns on bosses, especially where every tick counts.
The main rule: substats beat sets. An off-set piece with 5 Speed and 20 Accuracy is better than a junk piece from the right set. Do not spread six different sets for the bonuses — you lose stats doing it.
Where universal builds break
- High Arena. You need either pure Speed (a Speed lead and 300+ on key champions) or Resist tuned to the specific matchup. One compromise set will not cover it.
- Hydra. Wants Accuracy for Provoke and block buffs plus real bulk — often through Regeneration or Stalwart.
- Clan Boss. Its own world: Lifesteal or Stalwart, Accuracy for poisons and HP burn, Speed tuned to the difficulty.
- Solo farming. The opposite case: a damage dealer with Lifesteal and high damage, where Speed is secondary.
The takeaway is simple: a universal build is your baseline, but top content still gets its own dedicated set.
Practical checklist: build it without going broke
- Pick 2–3 modes where the champion is actually needed. Trying to cover everything at once is the fast road to mediocrity.
- Use the artifact filter and hunt pieces with two useful substats: Speed + Accuracy, Speed + HP%.
- Upgrade gradually — to 12–16 first, and only max out pieces that will stay in the build.
- Glyphs are the cheap way to add 10–20 Accuracy or Speed without replacing a piece.
- Masteries for Speed and Accuracy often give more than one extra percent of gear.
- Never skip free artifact removal events — that is your window to experiment without burning silver.
And keep 2–3 working sets across different champions instead of one perfect one: rotation is more useful than trying to make a single champion do everything.
Summary
Universal gear exists, but it is a compromise, not a maximum. Put Speed on the boots, add Accuracy for the kit and HP%/DEF% for bulk, lean on Perception and Speed sets, and watch your substats — that covers most PvE modes. For top Arena, Hydra and high-end Clan Boss, keep dedicated builds: that is where universality ends.
