A universal champion isn't the single strongest unit in the game — it's the one you can move from dungeons to Clan Boss to Hydra without rebuilding. Below are champions that cover several modes at once, plus the epics and rares that hold a stable team together.
What counts as a universal champion
The criteria are practical, not theoretical:
- Two or three modes minimum. Useful on Clan Boss and in dungeons, not just in one narrow spot.
- Works without perfect gear. Delivers on a mid-tier artifact set, not only on your best pieces.
- Doesn't fall off with progress. Helps a new account clear content and still holds a slot later.
- Fills a specific role. Shields, revival, control, Decrease DEF or enemy MAX HP damage — something you actually need.
The legendary backbone: support and survivability
Build around the champion that keeps the team alive. Cardiel is the textbook pick here: shields, healing and revival make him welcome in dungeons and against Hydra alike. Tetsuya the Deliverer and Marius the Gallant bring dense, useful effect kits, while Underpriest Brogni and Valkyrie carry teams with shields on hard-hitting bosses.
Mithrala Lifebane deserves a separate mention — earned through Hydra progress, she looks equally at home in PvE teams and in the Arena. Marichka the Unbreakable is about survival and control, Siphi the Lost Bride about Speed and cleansing, and Lydia The Deathsiren, the Faction Wars reward, remains one of the best PvE controllers in the game.
Debuffers and boss damage
The second pillar of any PvE team is the champions that cripple the boss. Dracomorph and Teodor the Savant work through poisons and weakening effects, Cecilia The Red Hope and Senna Amberheart through reliable debuffs and support, and Gnut through damage scaling against high-HP targets.
For raw damage, look at Acrizia (damage tied to the target's MAX HP), Sydax King Killer, The Tin Woodman, Klaazag Keyhulk and Niamhe Spear of Nyresa — all of them see play in dungeons and in the Arena. Krisk the Ageless is still the reference Clan Boss universal: shields, control and survivability in one package.
Epics and rares that carry accounts
Legendaries are luck; steady progress comes from epics:
- Deacon Armstrong — Speed, Accuracy and useful debuffs; one of the highest-value epics in the game.
- Maneater and Demytha — the core of Block Damage Clan Boss setups.
- Geomancer — boss damage through reflection, works across several modes.
- Frozen Banshee and Fayne — poison and debuffs for Clan Boss; Pain Keeper — cooldown reduction.
- Coldheart and Royal Guard — enemy MAX HP damage for dungeons; Seer — wave clearing by detonating buffs.
- Stag Knight, Uugo, Vogoth, Toragi The Frog — Decrease DEF/ATK, healing and shields.
Among the starters, Kael lasts the longest: poisons and solid damage keep him a reasonable Clan Boss option until dedicated champions arrive.
Who shines where
| Mode | Champions to use | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clan Boss | Krisk, Dracomorph, Teodor the Savant, Geomancer, Frozen Banshee, Fayne, Maneater, Demytha | Accuracy, poisons and HP burn, Speed |
| Dungeons | Acrizia, Gnut, Coldheart, Royal Guard, Seer, Stag Knight | enemy MAX HP damage, wave control |
| Hydra | Mithrala Lifebane, Cardiel, Underpriest Brogni, Vogoth, Toragi The Frog | survivability, healing, debuffs |
| Arena | Deacon Armstrong, Seeker, Ursala the Mourner, Madame Serris, Genbo the Dishonored | Speed, Accuracy, control |
Gearing a universal champion
- Speed first. A slow debuffer never lands anything before the boss takes a turn.
- Accuracy on debuffers. On high dungeon stages and in Hydra the bar is high — key debuffers push well past 200.
- Survivability over extra crit. For supports, HP% and DEF% give more than another crit damage roll.
- Masteries by role. Damage dealers want Offense masteries for extra boss damage; supports want Defense and Support.
Common mistakes
- Building one champion "for everything" and never adjusting the build per mode.
- Chasing crit on a support at the cost of Speed and Accuracy.
- Slotting a legendary simply because it's a legendary instead of an epic with the right role.
- Skipping Decrease DEF — without it, boss damage drops several times over.
Summary
Universal is about role, not rarity. Start with the backbone: shields and revival support (Cardiel, Tetsuya the Deliverer, Underpriest Brogni), debuffers (Dracomorph, Mithrala Lifebane, Deacon Armstrong) and boss damage (Acrizia, Gnut, Geomancer, Coldheart). A team built that way clears Clan Boss, dungeons and Hydra without a full rebuild, and any legendary you pull later simply takes an empty slot.
