Banner Lords is the faction where a veteran has a dozen legendaries sitting in the vault while a mid-game player still can't clear stage 21. The problem is almost never damage: the faction lacks reliable support, cleansing and control. Here's the practical version — who to build first, what a working team looks like, and which stats actually matter in the Crypt.
What makes the Banner Lords Crypt different
Banner Lords is a knightly faction with a high ceiling and roles spread thin. The strengths are there: shields, DEF and ATK buffs, solid nukers, decent single-target control. The weakness is support — good AoE revives and cleanses are scarce, and that is exactly why teams fall apart on stages 14 and 21, where the fight is about survival rather than clear speed.
So the main takeaway: you beat the Crypt with roles, not with champion ratings. Five nukers in a row won't save you if nobody can raise the dead, strip a debuff and put up a shield in time.
Best legendary champions
The table lists the champions most often taken into the Banner Lords Crypt. The ranking is conditional — what matters is whether a champion fills a specific hole in your roster.
| Champion | Role | Why they help |
|---|---|---|
| Marichka the Unbreakable | tank / damage | holds the fight together and stops the team from collapsing |
| Taras the Fierce | damage | main single-target and AoE damage |
| Cecilia The Red Hope | support | shields and protection for the team |
| Sigmund the Highshield | tank | survives what kills everyone else |
| Raglin | support | revive and buffs |
| Sethallia | support | cleanse and buff control on the enemy |
| Baron | damage | heavy hit on the priority target |
| Ronda | damage | accessible legendary with strong single-target hits |
| Androc the Glorious | flex | mythical with two forms, covers several roles at once |
Worth mentioning separately: Acelin the Stalwart, Minaya, Septimus, Quintus the Triumphant, Titus Blackplume and Staltus Dragonbane are all solid legendaries, but invest only if they plug a specific gap. Collab and event champions such as Edward Kenway, Rathalos Blademaster, Dorothy Gale, Michelangelo, Kaja the Wry and Timit the Fool aren't worth chasing purely for the Crypt — they're good, not required.
Epics that actually clear the Crypt
Epics are usually what makes the difference: they're easier to pull and cheaper to build into masteries.
- Ursala the Mourner — the epic taken into the Crypt more often than many legendaries: support with a revive and a useful aura.
- Stag Knight — decrease DEF and decrease ATK on enemies, the faction's main damage enabler.
- Archmage Hellmut — increase SPD and C.RATE plus turn-meter work; on stage 21 that often matters more than another 10% damage.
If you have none of them, start with Stag Knight: he pays off in the Crypt and in regular PvE content alike.
Team skeleton and synergies
- A tank or shield champion — holds the first two or three turns while your team ramps up.
- A support with revive or healing — insurance against random deaths on the boss.
- A debuffer with accuracy — decrease DEF and ATK so your damage dealers aren't hitting into nothing.
- One or two damage dealers — no more: a third nuker usually means nobody can heal.
A word on auras: a leader aura for SPD or ACC saves dozens of attempts. Don't hand the lead to the first champion with a nice portrait.
Gear, stats and masteries
The basic Crypt rule: Speed on everyone except, perhaps, a pure tank who cares more about HP and DEF. Supports and debuffers need accuracy — without it, decrease DEF simply won't land on the high stages. Build damage dealers for C.RATE and C.DMG rather than raw ATK.
Pick sets by job: Speed and Perception are universal, Accuracy for debuffers, Resistance for the tank against control. Take support and defence masteries on your supports, damage masteries on your nukers; don't try to make a jack-of-all-trades out of your tank.
Common mistakes
- Five damage dealers and hope for a fast burn — that doesn't work on stage 21.
- Ignoring Speed: a team that always moves second loses half its survivability.
- Accuracy below a sensible minimum — your debuffs simply miss.
- Building every legendary you own instead of one working team.
Summary
Banner Lords isn't cleared by top-of-the-list champions but by a skeleton: a tank, a support with a revive, an accurate debuffer and one or two damage dealers. Start with epics — Ursala the Mourner and Stag Knight deliver more than half the faction's legendaries — then fix Speed and Accuracy. If stage 21 keeps failing, the problem is almost always support and stats, not damage.
