Poison vs HP Burn: Which One Actually Wins in PvE?

Poison and HP Burn answer the same question: how do you kill a high-HP boss without perfect gear? The mechanics behind them are different, and there is no universal winner — it depends on the content, the fight length and how many debuff slots you can spare. Here is the practical comparison.

How both debuffs actually work

Both are damage-over-time debuffs: they tick at the start of the target's turn and ignore DEF. Boss armour does not blunt them, but Accuracy is required on every application — a resisted cast means no debuff and a broken plan.

  • Poison comes in 2.5% and 5% versions of the target's MAX HP. Each application is its own debuff slot and stacks with the rest.
  • HP Burn does not stack: reapplying refreshes the duration instead of adding a second tick. It always takes exactly one slot.
  • A target can hold at most 10 debuffs, and poison stacks compete with the useful ones for that space.
  • Both are percentage-based: the fatter the target, the more value you get. On low-HP wave enemies they barely register.
  • Both need time: if the fight ends in two or three turns, the ticks never land.

Poison: where it wins

Poison is a long-fight tool for one fat target. That is where a stack of 5–10 poisons turns every enemy turn into a source of your damage.

  • Damage does not scale with your champion's ATK: a poisoner needs Accuracy, Speed and survivability, not crit damage.
  • The classic answer for Clan Boss and high-HP dungeon bosses — Kael carries this role far longer than most starters have any right to.
  • Downside: poisons eat slots. A stack of 8–10 leaves no room for Decrease DEF, Decrease ATK, Weaken or Block Buffs, and without those the team loses both damage and survival.
  • Downside: poison does not clear waves or campaign — that is direct damage territory.

HP Burn: where it wins

HP Burn is about slot economy and a steady background. One debuff works for the whole fight while the other nine slots stay free for control and damage debuffs.

  • Often applied as an AoE, which makes it comfortable on waves and mob packs.
  • Great on teams whose main damage is direct hits and who just want the burn ticking in the background.
  • Pairs well with Decrease DEF and Weaken, because the slots are actually free.
  • Downside: it does not stack. Two burners in one team step on each other — the second only refreshes the first.
  • Downside: single-target peak damage is usually lower than a full poison stack on a fat boss.

The table is a guideline, not a verdict. Check the specific boss for immunities and resistance: some are immune to certain debuffs or shorten their duration, and then the pre-fight screen matters more than theory.

Building around either DoT

  • Build Accuracy for the specific boss instead of maxing it out: overshooting costs you Speed and HP.
  • Masteries: Sniper for debuff placement chance, Master Hexer for duration, Eagle Eye for Accuracy. Everything else goes into survival.
  • The Toxic set on a poisoner gives your normal attacks a chance to add poison — a cheap way to gain extra stacks.
  • Speed matters for both: the more often the target takes a turn, the more ticks you get. But if the boss wipes your team in three turns, no DoT will save you.
  • Important: Decrease DEF and Weaken boost direct damage, not poison or burn ticks. Do not mix them up.

Common mistakes

  1. Ten poisons and no Decrease DEF — the team loses all of its direct damage.
  2. Two burners in the same team, with the second one doing nothing.
  3. Relying on DoTs in fights that last two turns.
  4. Ignoring a boss's immunities and resistance.
  5. A glass-cannon poisoner that dies before the first tick.

Summary

Poison is the tool for a long fight against one high-HP target: Clan Boss, dungeons, Hydra heads. HP Burn is the universal background DoT that does not eat slots and forgives sloppy builds. In practice the winner is not poison or burn on its own, but a team that spends one to three slots on a DoT and fills the rest with Decrease DEF, Weaken and control.
