Tanks in RAID: how to build them and who fits the role

A tank in RAID: Shadow Legends is not a class — it is a role you build yourself with gear and masteries. The same legendary can play as a fragile support or as a wall that soaks the whole wave and the boss. Here is how the role actually works, which stats matter and which heroes are worth building for it in 2026.

Why you need a tank and what a tank is not

Damage in RAID lands on everyone, and without a lightning rod your nukers die in two or three turns. A tank does three jobs: eats the wave's burst, strips part of the boss's kit and holds the fight together while the rest of the team deals damage.

That said, a tank is rarely a hero that does nothing. Almost every modern tank also lands debuffs, hands out buffs or hits off DEF/HP. A pure damage sponge is only really needed in Arena defence and in very specific Clan Boss setups.

The three mechanics a tank lives on

Provoke

Provoke forces enemies to attack the bearer and, more importantly, to use their A1. On waves that switches off AoE skills and debuffs entirely — often stronger than any Shield. It works on most bosses too, but it is an Accuracy check: without roughly 200–250 Accuracy in mid dungeons and 300+ in the top ones, Provoke keeps getting resisted.

Ally Protection

The buff redirects a share of the damage your allies take onto the bearer — around a quarter, with the exact value depending on the skill. It is the backbone of Clan Boss and heavy dungeon boss survival. Two Ally Protection buffs do not stack, only the strongest applies, so doubling the role in one team is wasted.

Shields and damage reduction

A Shield absorbs damage before it reaches HP, and its size scales off the caster's stat — HP or DEF. Shields do not stack either: the biggest one stays. On top of that come passives that cut incoming damage, and even a modest percentage there is a huge survivability boost.

How to build: stats and gear

First, check what the hero scales off. DEF scalers (Krisk, Gnut) want defence, HP scalers (Underpriest Brogni, Mithrala Lifebane) want health. Mixing the two is a waste.

  • Speed comes first. A tank that moves once every three turns provides neither Shields nor Provoke. Aim for 180–220 in dungeons and 250+ in Arena.
  • DEF or HP — around 3000–4000+ DEF for a DEF tank and 50–70k HP for an HP tank; the numbers climb with the content level.
  • Accuracy — if the tank lands Provoke or debuffs: 200–250 for regular dungeons, 300+ for top floors and Arena.
  • Resistance — for Arena and PvP defence, otherwise the tank just gets debuffed into uselessness.
  • Crit rate and ATK — only if the hero also hits off DEF/HP (Gnut, Acrizia).

On sets: Speed plus Perception is the baseline for a provoker, Defence or Life and Immortal for a pure damage holder, Shield is a nice bonus but never a substitute for stats. In PvP it is almost always Stone Skin — a few turns of debuff immunity is worth more than raw numbers.

Masteries

The classic is the Defence tree plus Support. In Defence take everything that cuts incoming damage and improves survival; in Support take Accuracy and debuff-application chance so Provoke lands reliably.

If the tank also deals damage (Gnut, Acrizia, The Tin Woodman), the third tree goes into Offence with the boss-damage masteries. For a provoker, no mastery will save you from missing Accuracy: stats first, tree second.

Who fits the role

True all-rounders that carry both PvE and PvP are rare, but they exist. These are the heroes actually worth building as tanks.

The budget core needs no legendaries: Toragi The Frog, Skullcrusher and Rearguard Sergeant cover Ally Protection, while Vogoth and Umbral Enchantress cover Provoke. And the other way round — do not try to turn Skullcrown, Magnarr or Genbo the Dishonored into tanks. They are damage dealers and lose their whole point in a tank build.

Common mistakes

  • Building a tank with crit and ATK so it also hits — you end up with neither damage nor survival.
  • A provoker without Accuracy: the skill is there, the effect is not.
  • Two Ally Protection heroes in one team — the buffs do not stack.
  • Ignoring Speed: the Shield never comes up and Provoke never gets pressed.
  • Putting an HP tank into DEF gear, or the reverse.
  • Bringing a tank into PvP without Resistance and Stone Skin.

Summary

A tank in RAID is a role, not a character: Provoke, Ally Protection and Shields built around one stat (DEF or HP), with Speed and Accuracy as mandatory extras. Start with one hero — a DEF tank for waves or an Ally Protection hero for Clan Boss — push Speed past 200, add Accuracy, and only then think about a second one. Budget picks like Toragi The Frog and Skullcrusher cover most of the job, while legendaries such as Krisk and Gnut are for top-end content and Arena.
